She was born in Champaign County on March 22, 1911, a daughter of the late Fred N. and Nell Calland Johnson. She graduated from Wittenberg University and taught English for three years before her marriage to F. Merrill Lash, who preceded her in death in 1964. After his death she taught for 11 years at Graham High School. An intelligent, tolerant, loving woman with a good sense of humor, her long life was an inspiration to many, both students and friends, who in turn, inspired her. In 2005, because of failing eyesight, she moved to a retirement community in Greensboro to be near her daughter and son-in-law. With her characteristic optimism, she resolved to enjoy life there and did, making a new life for herself and many new friends. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah (David) Dowds of Greensboro; two granddaughters, Eva Merrill Dowds of New York City and Patricia (David) Dowds Harrison of Hanover, N.H.; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Isabel Harrison; a niece, Patricia (Robert) Johnson Wright; a nephew, Robert (Rachel) Smith; a number of great-nieces and -nephews and many cousins. A memorial service is conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana. Private interment is in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana.
