He was 95. Born in Mad River Township, he was the sixth son of the late Charles Franklin Oberly and Dorothea Mary Clingerbery Oberly. Donald Graduated from Westville H.S. in 1934 and studied science and mathematics at Urbana College and Ohio State University. Returning home, he helped his father farm, taking over and expanding the farming operation when his father retired. Donald married the love of his life, Betty Jo Hawkins, in June of 1944, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994. Donald was a seeker of knowledge and an avid reader. His interests were many, including history, philosophy, natural sciences, music, bird watching, and traveling. He also enjoyed playing chess and solving challenging puzzles. Donald was a 50-Year Tree Farmer and self-taught wood worker, and he crafted many furniture items and other creations from wood harvested from his farm. Donald was active in the community throughout his life, serving on the Westville Grain Board, Farm Bureau Federation Board, Clark County Producers Board, the Urbana Library Board, and the Zoning Board. He was also Mad River township clerk for many years, served as treasurer of K.of P. Lodge, and was a member of Harmony Lodge # 8 F. & A.M. Donald was a Supervisor for the Champaign County; Soil and Water Conservation District, and was honored as the Champaign Soil and Water Conservation District’s Outstanding Cooperator for 1979. Donald was predeceased by his parents, his wife, and his six siblings: Arthur Franklin, Bertram Milton, Serle William, Paul Allen, Clell Virgil and Dorothy Frances Ward. The family will receive friends 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Thursday, June 14, 2012 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main Street, Urbana where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 15, 2012. Burial will follow in Nettle Creek Cemetery.Contributions may be made in Donald’s memory to the Westville United Methodist Church.
