He was born April 27, 1928, in Adams Township, the son of Philip V. and Gladys (Staymen) Russell. Growing up he helped his father and brother work on farms throughout Champaign County. Philip graduated from Concord High School in 1946. He went to work at Crowell- Collier in Springfield until 1956 when it went out of business. On July 27, 1947, he married Betty (Hendricks) Russell. They were married for 17 years. On September 17, 1966, he married Juanita (McNeely) Russell. They would have celebrated their 45th anniversary this year. He was a longtime member of the Concord United Methodist Church. He was a member of the ABC sanctioned leagues bowling teams for 50-plus years. At the age of 78, he retired from Bodey & Sons Construction, after 49 years of service. It was a job he greatly enjoyed. He built and remodeled several houses and businesses throughout Champaign County. Most of his family has something in their homes that he built. From bedroom suites, bookcases, to kitchen cabinets, countertops, and various furniture pieces, even a custom bowling ball stand. Any idea you had, he could take it and make something 10 times better than you even imagined. If he wasn't working, he was content sitting in his recliner reading the newspaper or watching TV. He was a longtime Cincinnati Reds fan, from listening to games on the radio in the early years to watching nightly games on TV. He recently enjoyed Friday night "farkle" with his wife's family. Philip was a kind hearted and patient man who never spoke a harsh word about anyone. When asked, he was known for his usual response, "I Suppose." He raised five hardworking children and was very proud of each and every one of them. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Wilma Russell, a son-in-law, Dennis Clifford and a granddaughter, Carolanne Whitt. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in VERNON FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Wayne Engles officiating. Burial will follow at Concord Cemetery.
