PARIS - Ruth A. Cory Sayre, 84, of St. Paris passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at 1:20 a.m. in Springfield Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 31, 1926, in Ellwangen, Germany to the late Paul and Alma (Kranz) Heffner. Ruth married Francis George Cory on Nov. 12, 1949, and he preceded her in death on June 6, 1979. On Oct. 2, 1992, she married Raymond Jack Sayre and he died in May 1993. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Gertie (Bruce) Marshall of Urbana and Kay (Jeff) Schwierking of St. Paris. She had eight grandchildren, Dean (Mindy) Nitchman of Lexington, Tenn., Michelle (Paul) McGuire of Urbana, Melissa (Brian) Anderson of St. Paris, Annette Marshall (Troy Crowe) of Springfield, April Marshall of Urbana, Rachel Marshall (Andrew Caldwell) of Dayton and Aaron and Paul Edgington of St. Paris. Ruth had 14 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She also is survived by one son in-law, Richard Nitchman of Mesa, Ariz., two step children, Keith (Karen) Sayre of Troy and Sue (Jack) Kaylor of Tipp City; numerous step grandchildren; step great- grandchildren; and two sisters in-law, Mary Morton of Memphis, Tenn. and Jane (Mike) Keith of Riviera Beach, Fla.; and many special friends. In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by one daughter, Eleonore Nitchman; one brother, Heinz Heffner; and sister, Gerda Schmidt. Ruth was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she participated in the Women's Group. She was a member of D.A.R., a volunteer for the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. For 28 years she worked at Val Decker Meat Packing, Piqua. In 1980, she became a nurse's aid for Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana retiring in 2000. A funeral mass will be held at 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 121 E. Walnut St, St. Paris with Father Greg Konerman presiding. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, St. Paris. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris. Memorial Donation can be made to the Cancer Association of Champaign County, Cornerstone Hospice, Alzheimer's Association or the Red Cross.
