He was a son of Charles Stafford and Virlie K. (Dresher) Sayers, born September 4, 1919 in Lawrenceville, Ohio. John attended Manchester College in Indiana and was graduated from The Ohio State University. He was a pilot in the Army Air Corps Air Sea Rescue Service during World War II, taught and coached basketball and baseball in the Champaign County schools and was in the insurance business (Mr. Insurance) in Springfield for many years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and Anthony Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, both for more than 60 years and a member of First Settlers of Clark County. He was a past-president of both the Springfield City and the Clark County Joint Vocational School Boards; past- president of the Ohio Leaders Club, the Springfield Life Underwriters, Springfield Lions Club and First Lutheran Church Council; and former 7th Congressional District Coordinator for the Bicentennial Competition for the Constitution and Bill of Rights. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret (Barger) Sayers, a son John P., II (Jack) and his wife, Nancy; a daughter Jane A. Switzer and her husband, Dan; a granddaughter Stephanie A. Hudson and her husband, Scot, all of Springfield; three grandsons, John P., III (J.P.) and his wife, Betsy, of Palm Springs, California, Dan G. Switzer, II and his wife, Jennifer, of Hilliard, Jeffrey A. Switzer of Baltimore, Maryland and three great-grandchildren, Samuel Allen Hudson, Sarah Ann Hudson and Paisley Reese Sayers. Also surviving is his twin brother G. Wm. (Bill), of Columbus, a brother Russell and his wife, DeEtta, of Austin, Texas, a brother- in-law Paul E. Barger of Sarasota, Florida, thirteen nieces and nephews and many great nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dora May Williams and her husband, Dale, sister-in-law Evelyn Sayers, and two nieces, Evonne Studebaker and Sandra Comerford. John will be remembered for his bow tie, his love of family, his interest in education, and interest in sports, especially golf. In spite of failing health, in July of 2001, he shot an 82-one shy of his goal of shooting his age. His pancake breakfasts will be remembered by family, friends, neighbors and business, government and professional associates. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff who so faithfully tended to John. Visitation will be from 3-6 on Friday, May 22 with a memorial service to follow at the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor James Christian officiating.
