He was born March 5, 1917 in Urbana the son of George and Wilhelmina (Oelker) Schafer. He was a 1935 graduate of Urbana Local. George was a farmer for over 71 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Urbana where he served as an Elder. He was a past Board Member for Farm Bureau Council and Urbana Local School as well as he served on the Soil & Water Conservation District Board. He was the time keeper for Urbana Local basketball games and participant and sponsor for the 1950 National Plowing Contest. George was Number One Grandpa and Great Grandpa. He is survived by one daughter, Sue S. Wagner of Anchorage, Alaska; three sons, James M. (Joann) Schafer, Munsell (Linda) Schafer and Doug (Carolyn) Schafer all of Urbana; one daughter-in-law, Susan Hunt of Grove City; 13 grandchildren, Richard Wagner, Melissa Befort, Tami Cox, Carol Hunter, Mike, Steve, Larry, Geoffrey, Damon, Elizabeth, Luke, Amanda and Jolene Schafer; 14 great-grandchildren, Justin, Cassie, Riley, Jessica, Jordan, Emily, Samuel, Erin, Kara, Jacob, Ashley, Cole, Chelsea and Logan; one sister-in-law, Jean Everhart of Columbus, three nephews, Jack and Don Schafer of Xenia and Albert Schafer of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margaret, a son, Robert George Schafer, two brothers, Clarence and Albert Schafer and a sister, Alice Schafer. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 in the First Presbyterian Church, Urbana. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the church with the Rev. Kevin Horrigan officiating the family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service.
