She was born Jan. 17,1926, in Jackson, Ky., the daughter of the late Ashford and Julie (Gross) Thomas. Mrs. Shipley was formerly employed by Beech Manufacturing in North Hampton and more recently at Terry's Cafeteria in Piqua. On April 20,1946, Opal married James L. Shipley, who passed away on April 18,1989. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Cox; one granddaughter; and a brother, O'Brien Thomas. Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte (James E. Jr.) McClain of New Lebanon and Julie Ann (James) Thompson of Ft. Loramie; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Kelly Reed Thomas of Martin, Ky.; three sisters, Norma Jean (Amos) Morgan of Piqua, Odetta Payne of Springfield and Liz (Coolie) Walker of Clearwater Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, in the Richeson-Wickham and Atkins Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Douglas Upton from the St. Paris United Methodist Church officiating. Burial, in Evergreen Cemetery in St. Paris, will take place at a later date.
