Smith, 88, of Urbana died at 2:40 A.M. Thursday, March 11, 2010 in the Wellington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Urbana. He was born April 8, 1921 in Westville, a son of Raymond and Mary Ethel (Johnson) Smith. Hugh retired from Smith Farm Equipment, which he owned for 55 years. He enjoyed farming and had a love for tractors. He was a member of Westville United Methodist Church, served in the US Army and was a WWII veteran. He was a member of American Legion Pearce-Kerns Post 120 in Urbana and Knights of Pythias in Westville. Survivors include his children, Elizabeth Granger of Ocala FL, Sharon Shafer of Atlanta, GA, Teresa Shulte and her husband Gary of Mason, Hugh "Rusty" Smith of Westville, Mary Susan Gregg of Westville, 5 grandchildren, Laura Ryan and her husband Tom, Andrea and Katherine Shafer, Sara Madden and her husband Ira and Gary Shulte IV, great grandchildren, Cayleigh and Christen Ryan, Sophia and Isabella Madden and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Smith on October 13, 2002, his parents, a brother, Earl L. Smith and a sister, Rhea Mae Clyburn. The family will receive friends 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. Thursday, March 18, 2010 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main Street, Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 19, 2010 in the Westville United Methodist Church, 76 N. SR 560, Westville with Rev. Dr. Peter J. Bellini officiating. Burial will follow in Nettle Creek Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by members of the US Army and American Legion Pearce-Kerns Post 120.
