She is survived by her three children and their families, Jack and Mary Sommers, Urbana; Dixie Sommers, Alexandria, Virginia; Cathy and Mike Pullins, Cable; grandchildren John and Diane Sommers, Pleasantville, Ohio; Matt Pullins, Lakewood, Ohio; Sarah Pullins, Chicago, Illinois; and Kent Pullins, Cincinnati; great- granddaughters Lauren and Melissa Sommers, Pleasantville, Ohio; brother and sister-in-law Tom and Phyllis Dix, Moscow, Ohio; sister-in-law Sharon Dix, Kenton, Ohio; and sister Barbara Dix, Columbus. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Sommers, Jr., grandson Mark Sommers, parents George and Grace Evans Dix, step-mother Ruth Dix, sister Elsie Dix Snook, and brothers Robert Dix and Chuck Dix. Mrs. Sommers was born in Delaware, Ohio, June 7, 1921, and graduated from Brown High School and The Ohio State University, School of Home Economics in the College of Agriculture. She was a teacher and mentor, first at Hebron, Ohio, Local Schools, then at Urbana Local Schools, Salem High School, and Graham High School from 1960 to 1976, where she started the home economics job training program and taught adult classes. She supervised home economics and other programs at Hi-Point Joint Vocational School from 1976 until she retired in 1981. During her time as an educator and continuing until her death, Mrs. Sommers was a mentor, a role model and active leader in the Champaign County community, which she loved. Mrs. Sommers was a member of Westville United Methodist Church, where she led the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Champaign County Farm Bureau. She was admitted to the Daughters of American Revolution in 1982 and served in several leadership roles for the DAR Urbana Chapter. She oversaw the DAR American History Essay Contest for nine years, resulting in scholarship opportunities for Champaign County youth. She was a 4-H Club advisor and 4-H project judge, an avid gardener with award winning roses, and a member of Valley Garden Club. She was an honorary member of Alpha Zeta Fraternity, Townshend Chapter. The family wishes to thank the staff of Vancrest of Urbana and Evercare Hospice for their tender care and love. She will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, 235 Miami St., Urbana, Ohio. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in the Westville United Methodist Church with the Pastor Chuck Glover officiating.
