He was born in Urbana on May 23, 1934, to the late Paul and Elizabeth Strapp. He also was preceded in death by sister, Carolyn Strapp; brother, Thomas Strapp; and granddaughter, Hannah J. Strapp. On Feb. 28, 1970, he married Marena Lingrel in Urbana and they were married for 25 years. He is survived by their five children, Emily (Jeffrey) Eckstein of Mt. Victory, Jeremy (Jennifer) Strapp of Findlay, Sarah (Robert) Johnson of Hilliard, Jonah (Ginger) Strapp of DeGraff and Mary (Stewart) Carpenter of Fairfield; 15 grandchildren, Jonathan Eckstein, Kevin Eckstein, Brenden Eckstein, Connor Eckstein, Ruth Eckstein, Amanda Strapp, Ryan Strapp, Megan Johnson, Riley Johnson, Owen Johnson, Kelby Strapp, Hallie Strapp, Joey Strapp, Whitney Strapp and Sammy Strapp; two brothers, Robert (Kathy) Strapp of Urbana and Joseph (Myrna) Strapp of Los Angeles; three sisters, Catherine (Thomas) McIntire of Rockford, Ill., Cynthia Rizzutti of Urbana and Nancy Strapp of Cincinnati; eight nieces; and four nephews. A 1952 graduate of St. Mary High School, he served in the U.S. Army for two years. He received an honorable discharge in 1963 and then worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., and subsequently the State of Ohio, Department of Highways. John was then an industrial engineer for Siemens for 35 years. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a member of Parish Council at St. Mary Church in Urbana. An active member of St. Patrick Church in Bellefontaine, he also was a member of Parish Council, serving in a number of capacities including as a teacher of the RCIA classes. John was a member of Liberty Township Zoning Board, and a volunteer at Discovery Riders. He also enjoyed playing in two dulcimer groups. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. Father Greg Konerman is celebrant for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 231 Washington Ave., Urbana. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walter & Smith Funeral Home, 642 S. Main St., Urbana.
