He was born September 18, 1922 in Loup City, Nebraska, the son of Clifton and Clara Thornton. He was a veteran of the United States Army during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was retired from Grimes Aerospace after 33 years of service and was a member of the Grimes Quarter Century Club. Everyone who knew Ernie knew that he was an avid golfer. He participated in and organized several local golf leagues and tournaments. He volunteered many hours and assisted with numerous civic projects and events. He was a member of the Myrtle Tree Baptist Church of St. Paris, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Everett (Bud) and Virgil; and son Mike. He is survived by sister, Alma Amerman of Urbana; son Jay of Texas, stepdaughter and son-in-law Chrystal (Jordan) and Joe Mayer of New Albany; 5 grandchildren Bradley Thornton of Urbana, Quentin Thornton of Lima, Joseph, Katie and John Mayer of New Albany and 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ernie will be sadly missed by family, friends, and the community. A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, January 31, 2004 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, URBANA. Services will follow immediately at the funeral home with Reverend Clifford Kissinger officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Myrtle Tree Baptist Church, St. Paris, Ohio 43072 or the charity of one's choice. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in St. Paris. Pallbearers for the family will be: Bradley Thornton, Dale Thornton, Lucas Thornton, Joe Mayer, Joseph Mayer and John Mayer.
