Kenny was born on July 14, 1923 near Thackery, a son of the late John and Ethel (Woods) Zerkle. He married Ruth Constance Price on December 16, 1950. Together they raised two children who survive: John M. (Sue) Zerkle of Tipp City and Connie Crocker of Urbana. He was a loving grandfather to four grandchildren: Heidi (Matt) Reynolds of Celina, Amanda (Dustin) Cole of Sidney, Rebecca (Russel) Eichhorn of Troy, Lucas Zerkle of Tipp City and five great grandchildren: Isabel and Jacob Eichhorn, Grant and Aiden Cole and Nolan Reynolds. A brother-in-law Paul (Barbara) Price of Urbana and many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his wife and parents, Kenny was preceded in death by his brother Walter Zerkle. Kenny loved his family very much and was very proud of them. Kenny was a graduate of Terre Haute and Westville Schools in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Camp San Luis Obispo, California. He retired from International Harvester in 1983 after 26 years of service. Kenny coached softball teams for many years starting with the Channell Badgers in the 1960’s and ending as a volunteer coach for the girls at Graham High School. While his children were in school he enjoyed volunteering at sporting events. Kenny loved all animals, but especially enjoyed his dogs; training them to hunt and run in field trial races. Kenny didn’t know a stranger and enjoyed talking with anyone he met. He didn’t shy away from a challenge or speaking up for what he believed in. In his final years he enjoyed sitting on his porch with his wife waving at friends. The family wishes to express special thanks to Kenny’s wonderful neighbors, friends and doctors, along with Evercare Hospice and Vancrest of Urbana. A celebration of Kenny’s life will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 12:00 noon in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield Street, Saint Paris, Ohio with Pastors Chuck Glover, Sandi Maynard and Matthew Reynolds presiding. Burial will follow in Terre Haute Cemetery.
