obit-Dayton Journal- 7-Feb-1940 URBANA - Mrs. Harriet Brubaker, 95, last Civil 
war nurse in Ohio and one of two surviving in the United States, died at her 
home in nearby St. Paris at 5 p.m. Tuesday. She was the widow of Isaac 
Brubaker, for many years a St. Paris banker.
The daugher of Rev. James Manning, pastor of the old St. John's Lutheran 
church of St. Paris many years ago, she was born at Fultonham, Ohio, October 
7, 1844. Soon after the Civil war broke out, she went to Grafton, W. Va., to 
visit a friend. Shortly after the battle of Grafton, she enlisted in the 
nursing service of the Union army and was one of the first persons assigned to 
the army hospital established in a Grafton hotel. Later two other nurses 
joined her in maintaining the hospital until near the close of the war, when 
it was moved to Baltimore.

The nurse married Isaac Brubaker and the couple made their home for many years 
in St. Paris. In recent times she had resided with a nephew, William Brubaker.
Funeral will be held probably Friday in St. Paris and burial will be in Spring 
Grove cemetery.
