I send you a note in pencil which you will excuse as I cannot procure other materials as it is late and in the morning at 5 o'clock I leave for Camp Denison where I ought to have been tonight but you know I road four hours and I met many of my old friends with whom the memory of the past has become as it were a part of my being and from whom I could not tear myself away although I felt condemned in not hurrying onwards by some means so as to be able to be back to see you at the time indicated but there was no conveyence until 5 o'clock in the morning. At 10 we take the Lightning Express for Columbus. Reach there at 12 AM, From there I must come back by Dayton and I cannot tell when I will leave Columbus and the time I will be at home depends on that. I will come just as soon as I possibly can and Willa dont be impatient nor fret. This is the first night I have been absent from you and you dont know how I feel. I have been much affected by the affection that my old friends have manifested and Ms. Howard she wants to see you. I will tell you all about what made me feel bad when talking to her when I see you - her husband had been with me in Mexico. And I have much to tell you about him & others but I must close.
