(Flossie) Hulsizer - September 1999 The Rector-Gard Cemetery is located mostly in Section 12, Township 4, Range 10 of Mad River Township, Champaign Co., OH. A small part is in Section 11, Township 4, Range 10 of German Township, Clark Co., OH. The northern side of the cemetery borders the south side of Storms Creek, but there is no bridge across the creek from Storms Creek Road. The eastern side is a short distance west of Upper Valley Pike north of Tremont City, German Twp., Clark Co., OH. To enter the cemetery, park on Upper Valley Pike and walk west between the farmer’s field and the creek bank to a downed fence. THE HISTORY OF CLARK COUNTY, OHIO by W. H. Beers & Co., published 1881, German Township, page 687 states: "The Methodists of the locality built in 1820, a log church or meeting house just over the line in Champaign County, where persons for miles around worshiped. While this church was out of our territory, most of the early settlers of the township were closely identified with it, and in justice to the few pioneers now living, and to their descendants, many of whom now attend services there, this mention is made. The land upon which it was built was donated by Charles Rector, whose name it adopted. Conway Rector was the prime mover in its construction. At this time Rev. Arthur Elliott rode the circuit. The Presiding Elder of the district in which this circuit belonged in 1800 was Rev. Daniel Hitt, and the preachers were Rev. Joseph Rawen and John Collinson. Later ministers were Revs. McGuire, Robert James, Findley and Collins. The Rectors, Charles and Conway, were early Class-leaders. At this church is an old burying-ground, where peacefully sleep the bodies of many of German’s pioneers." As far as I now know, there have been three former tombstone readings completed and typed for local distribution. The earliest was done about 1973 by Mrs. Mary Skardon and Mrs. Ruth Fitz when the cemetery had been totally neglected for years and years and years. Their readings were therefore very incomplete. The second reading was done in 1988 by Mrs. Elizabeth Eichman and her daughter Mrs. Joy J. Maurer after Mr. Jerry Fair had spent many months cleaning it out. The third reading was done in 1997 by Mrs. Dorene Carse after the cemetery had again been neglected since Mr. Jerry Fair’s labors of 1988. In April 1999, Bob and I started cleaning out the again neglected cemetery working many, many hours through August 1999. We found many tombstones knocked over and also broken from vandals so are flat on the ground. Some stones have sunk deeper so we had to dig to read the entire inscription and the epitaph. Sometimes we found a footstone with no headstone so we knew to check for a buried tombstone. In some cases the soft sandstone tombstone had either chipped or worn away and it was impossible to read. The following revised list is the result of our efforts and is hopefully correct and complete: RECTOR-GARD CEMETERY TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS Read by Flossie (& Bob) Hulsizer 1909 West Washington Street Springfield, OH 45506-1156 E-mail: FHulsizer@aol.com September 1999 (Illegible broken stone) Reading done in 1988: "Mary Jane" "Parents W.E."
