Hayden, Private, of Capt. H.H. Hamilton, Co. A, Fourth Regt. Ohio Vol. Cav. was enlisted by Capt. Robie of the Fourth Regiment, at Cincinnati, O., on the 16 day of September 1861, to serve 3 years. He was born in Westmoreland Co. in the State of Pennsylvania, is Fifty-five years of age; five feet eight inches high; dark complexion; dark eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a merchant. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty 60 days. Station: Cumbd. Hospital, Nashville, Tenn. Date: November 23, 1863 Declaration for an Original Invalid Pension State of Ohio, County of Clark 18 May 188_ Abigah W. Hayden, aged 70 years, states that while in the line of his duty at Murfreesboro was thrown from his horse, the horse falling on him which injured his knee to the extent of separating the ligaments of his left knee. Also at the same time and place he contracted throat and lung disease which incapacitated him from performing field duty as a soldier and was discharged from Hospital on said disability. He was treated at the Field Hospital at Nashville, Tennessee, that he was sent to said Hospital on or about the 15 day of Aug. 1862 and remained there about one year. That since leaving the service, the applicant has resided in the city of Springfield, state of Ohio, and his occupation has been that of a shoe maker. His residence is No. 63 ½ E. Liberty street, Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. June 30, 1882 Abijah W. Hayden, a Private of Company A, 4th Regt. Ohio Cavalry Volunteers, was enrolled on the 16 day of September 1861 at Cincinnati, O. for 3 years and is reported Dec. 31 '61, on extra duty in Q.M. Dept., May & June '62, Gen. Mitchell's Body Guard. July & Aug. '62 Present; Sept. & Oct. '62 Sick in Hospital at Nashville, Tenn. Sept. 9, 1862 same to Octo. '63. Discharged Dec. 2, 1863. Nature of sickness Sept. 9, 1862 not stated. Application for Accrued Pension State of Ohio, County of Franklin 16 December 1885 Carrie C. Hayden, the lawful widow of Abijah W. Hayden, who died 9 December 1885, who had been granted a pension by Certificate No. 277333, and who has been paid by the Pension Agent at Columbus O, up to the 4 day of September 1885. She was married to the said Abijah W. Hayden on the 25th day of December 1872, at Parsons, in the state of Kansas under the name Carrie C. Harrington; she now resides at 93 West Court Street, in the City of Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. Also appeared as witnesses, Carrie B. Barclay, resident of Newark, Licking Co. Ohio, and Annie L. Copeland, resident of 93 West Court Street, Columbus, Ohio. Carrie B. Barclay was a witness of their marriage and Annie L. Copeland being her daughter and residing with her has personal knowledge of all these facts. Pensioner Dropped January 8, 1886 Pensioner Abijah W. Hayden, Certificate No. 277333, and who has been paid at $8, to 4 Sept. 1885, has been dropped because of information received in person from Edward E. Barkley that pensioner died 9 Dec. 1885. Declaration for Original Pension of a Widow State of Ohio, County of Franklin. 24 April 1886, appeared Carrie C. Hayden, aged 53 years, the widow of Abijah W. Hayden, who was wounded in his left knee by the falling of his horse, that he also contracted disease of his throat and lungs while in the service and that chronic bronchitis disease of his lungs, together with kidney trouble aggravated by a severe cold caused his death which occurred on the ninth day of December, A.D. 1885. She was married under the name of Carrie C. Harrington to the said Abijah W. Hayden on the 25th day of December, 1872, by John Wesley Fox, M.G., at Parsons, La Bette Co. Kansas; that both were previously married. Her husband, James S. Harrington, died at Cincinnati, Ohio July 10, 1860. The former wife of A.W. Hayden (Deborah) died at Cincinnati Ohio in 1863. Witnesses Louis Siebert and Edward E. Copeland, both residents of Columbus, Ohio. Columbus, Nov. the 24th 1886 To the Hon. J.C. Black Dear Sir Nearly two months since I sent to your Hon. the last remaining testimonys you required of me previous to the two last I sent certified copy of our marriage License & then the affidavits of the physician that was with my first husband at his death. I could not find out with all inquiry I made who was the first Mrs. Hayden physician was, the soninlaw that gave me his affidavit was in St. Louis at the time of her death but he gave me his affidavit & he being the only one of the surviving family. which I think will be satisfactory Your hon. it has been a year the 16th of next month since I filed as the widow of the said Abijah W. Hayden oh my honourd sir why the delay when my husband was drawing a pension & I have proven I am his legal widow. oh my it seems to hard the rich soldiers widows get their pensions without delay or trouble while I a poor invalid in advanced age left destitute on a cold world to battle with poverty & its attendents alone my deas. companion gone one who gave up his life for his counry & died from its effects his widow left to mourn the loss of a dear kind companion & cannot have what the government owes her, oh dear sir please take pity & look every day for a favorable result from your department - hope on hope ever but hope defered maketh the heart sick will not trouble you longer with my complaints but will look with much anxiety to your kind & speedy reply - I remain yours most respectfully Mrs. Carrie C. Hayden No. 273 Cart* Spring st. Letter to J.C. Black, Esq., Washington, D.C. from Rev. E.E. Barclay of Augusta, GA not dated, but stamped "received" 3 March 1887 "In reply to your letter to Mrs. Carrie C. Hayden referring to her widow's claim filed Middle Div &c. I would state that she says she forwarded to your office Oct. 16th/86 a letter containing affidavits of Jno. Murphy M.D. & Chas. Bird, Clk. of Cincinnati, O. the first of whom was at the death bed of Jas. S. Harrington, which occurred July 10th 3:00 P.M. 1858: buried at Spring Grove Cem. Cincinnati, O., the second being the son of Abijah W. Hayden's first wife - enclosed find letter from A.S. Merrel endorsing above facts: please send answer or further inquiries here as Mrs. Hayden is here, she is my wife's mother, utterly broken down in health & unable to stand the rigorous climate of the North, absolutely without means, I am only a missionary on this point & receive a very small salary. I mention these facts to show you that Mrs. H's case is a most urgent one & one in which the help she is attaining is positively necessary, an answer at your earliest convenience would oblige.! ! Merrell having been first duly sworn says that James S. Harrington, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, was his nephew, who was in the employ of the firm of W.S. & A.S. Merrell, late of Cincinnati, Ohio, and that after he had acquired a knowledge of the drug business in which said firm was engaged, he located in a retail drug store at the corner of Race and Front Street in said city of Cincinnati, Ohio, where he lived for about three or four years with his wife, Carrie Spaulding Harrington, and family, and where he died on July 10th, 1858 at 3 o'clock P.M. James S. Harrington was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. 18 March 1887 Pensioner Dropped. Certificate No. 231966 Class: Widow Pensioner: Carrie C. Hayden Soldier: Abijah W.
