A. Matthews II, Avid Stamp Collector, Dies Thomas A. Matthews, II, 74, of 2500 Signal Hill Rd., whose life-long avocation of stamp collecting brought him many awards and world-wide attention, died Monday in Mercy Medical Center at 2:30 a.m. He was born Nov 22, 1906, in Springfield, a son of Lewis and Mabel Thomas Matthews. Mr. Matthews attended Princeton and Harvard Universities and was involved in property management for much of his life. He was a member of Springfield Country Club and a former member of the Polo Club. The Springfield philatelist began collection stamps while in school and added to his massive collection throughout his life. His collection received a gold award at the International Philatelic Exhibition held in London in 1960. He was also instrumental in issuance of a commemorative airmail stamp on Aug. 17, 1959 – the 100th anniversary of the first airmail flight. Mr. Matthews once sold the world’s most rare airmail stamp for $24,500. Survivors include a son in New York City and a daughter of Springfield. His body was taken to Jackson, Lytle and Coffman Funeral Home where there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
