OBITUARY TEXT: Retired navy Cmdr. Sylvester A. THOMAS, 81, of Pensacola died
Saturday afternoon in a local hospital. Mr. THOMAS was a native of Springfield,
Ohio (son of Joseph Granville THOMAS and Bessie CALLISON) and had been a
resident of pensacola for the past 34 years. He retired as a commander in the U.
S. Navy after 33 years of service and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. THOMAS
was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Pensacola Golden Agers, the Sierra
Club, Silver Eagles, Pensacola Junior College Seniors Club and the Retired
officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy O'Connor THOMAS, two
daughters and sons-in- law, Marilyn and Ray HANSEN of Jackson, Miss, and Barbara
and Michael DEEP of Montgomery, Ala; a son and daughter-in-law, Marshall W and
Alyce THOMAS of Cincinnati; a sister Pearlie McNAIR of Springfield, Ohio, a
brother, James A. THOMAS of Arthur, Tenn; 13 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be at 9;30 am Tuesday at St.Paul Catholic
Church with Msgr. George Sindik officiating. Burial will be in Barrancaas
National Cemetery with Harper-Morris memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 pm today. The Rosary will be
recited at 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be make to St. Michael
Cemetery in care of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee or to the National
Museum of Naval Aviation.
