Thomas, 61, former Springfield city commissioner and head of Red Cross fund drives here in the 1930’s, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at his home in Bethesda, Md. Born in Springfield, Sept. 7, 1893, the son of William S. and Fannie Sentney Thomas, Mr. Thomas had resided in this city until 1939 when he went to Washington, D.C., to accept a position in the U.S. Bureau of Foreign Trade. Later, he went to work in the Bureau of Economics on World Trade. At the time of his death, he was with the Department of Commerce, for which he went on many missions to foreign countries. Sometime after his return from World War I, in which he served as a lieutenant in the Naval Air Corps, he was elected to the Springfield City Commission, a body on which his father had previously sat at the age of 21 years. Besides being active in Red Cross work, Mr. Thomas was on of the organizers of the Little Theater group in Springfield. He was a member of the Kiwanis club, Covenant Presbyterian Church and the American Legion. He also was president and treasurer of the Thomas Manufacturing Co. here. Survivors are his widow, Leona Davis Thomas, who came to Springfield from Mississippi as a Red Cross nurse and married Mr. Thomas here; his mother, Mrs. Fannie Thomas of Springfield, and a sister, Mrs. Burton Carr of Richmond, Ind. Mr. Thomas’ body is expected to arrive in Springfield Tuesday morning and will be taken to the Richards Memorial Home. Time of services will be announced later, with burial on the Thomas lot in Ferncliff Cemetery.
