SURNAMES: KINNANE, SHOEMAKER, STEWART, WREN DATE: Monday, January 25, 1960 OBITUARY TEXT: Pg. 1. Dr. R. J. WREN Dies at 79; Retired in '52. Following a length illness, Dr. Raphael J. WREN died this morning at his home, 14 State St. Dr. WREN, who had not practiced since June, 1952, was, prior to that date, one of the best known active physicians and surgeons in Ossining. Medical circle linked Dr.. WREN and Dr. Charles C. SWEET as the community's two leading surgeons. Dr. WREN was born Oct. 9, 1880 in Springfield, Ohio, a son of the late Edward and Margaret KINNANE WREN. He was a graduate of the Medical College of New York University and following his graduation, practiced in New York City for about two years before moving to Ossining to open a general practice. Dr. WREN was married Oct. 16, 1912, to Miss Clara SHOEMAKER of Ossining. A former member of the Board of Water Commissioners, Dr. WREN also belonged to a number of professional organizations. In 1941, he suffered a heart attack, but after his recovery resumed the practice of medicine which he continued until 1952. At that time, Dr. WREN suffered a stroke and in June of that year retired from practice. His son, Dr. Robert S. WREN, took over the care of some of his patients, but did not in fact, take over his father's entire practice since he (young Dr. WREN) was specializing as a surgeon. Dr. WREN is survived by his wife, and son, together with a daughter, Mrs. Gretta STEWART, six grandchildren, and two brothers, Christopher WREN of New York City and Thomas WREN of Dayton, Ohio. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of the Leach and Thomas Funeral Home, 32 State St., have not been completed.
