Davis G Grandaughter Henry L. Ellis was born 15 December 1846 in Batavia, Clermont Co., Oh. and died 27 August 1896 at Mt. Vernon Jefferson Co., IL. He was the second born of Rev. John Samuel Ellis born 01 May 1822 NC. and Maria Leonard born 02 July 1827 Ohio. John and Maria were married 01 May 1844 at Batavia, Clermont Co., OH. They had issue of two sons William Jesse(1845) and Henry Lealdas(1846). Their mother Maria died of Cholera on 29 January 1849 at the age of twenty five. His father John married Martha Eliza Pavey on 21 February 1850. Martha was a loving mother to William Jesse and Henry. John moved his family to Mt. Vernon Illinois in 1860. After learning the printing business at the local Newspaper Henry removed to Cincinnatti and secured a position on the Commercial-Gazette which he retained for twelve years.He later spent ten years at the Register News in Mt. Vernon IL. While in Ohio he met and married Miss Zella Mae Applegate on 23 January 1877, She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Applegate b. 1833 of OH. and Mary Ann Chambers b. 1831 of VA. Zella Mae died of Cholera on the 26 August 1882 at Pleasent Hill Ohio at 22 years of age. Henry and Zella Mae had issue of three daughters, Hattie Marie b. 12 November 1877 at Batavia Ohio, Mabel b. 31 October 1878 and d. 25 February 1884 aged five years, and Elizabeth b. 12 June 1879 in Ohio and d. 27 January 1883 aged two years.Both died in Mt Vernon IL. After the death of his wife Henry returned to Mt. Vernon with his three young daughetrs,two of whom died shortly thereafter from some illness of the period. The surviving daughter Hattie became Mrs. Elmer (Fred) Frances Strattan 26 February 1896 Mt Vernon. In 1887 Henry was elected City Clerk without Opposition. He was a soldier during the Civil War,serving in the 100 day service in the 136 th IL. and received a military Pension. He was a member of the G.A.R. and the knights of Pythis. A Tornado ripped through the heart of Mt. Vernon 20 February 1888,nearly destroying the center of town and much of the surrounding area. Three hundred people perished and thirty eight were injured. Henry and his half brother Charles Ellis were injured and on the critical list. We don't know the extent of their injuries,but they both recovered. Henry married Ida Mae Johnson at Mt Vernon 18 November 1888. She was born 1865 in Jackson Co., IL. and died 1945 in White Co., IL.Henry died 27 October 1896 at fifty years of age. He had been ill for many months and suffered from Sciatic Rheumatism but the desease did not assume a dangerous aspect until two weeks before his his death when he gradually faded away. Ida Mae was not mentioned in his obituary though she lived to be eighty years of age. Henry was buried at Oakwood Cemetery Mt Vernon, Jefferson Co., IL. with a parade and a grand ceremony by the G.A.R. and the Knights of Pythis.
