HORACE R. 'BUS' TOWNSEND, JR. 1922 - 2001 Horace R. 'Bus' Townsend, Jr., 79, of Wilmington, died at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 in hospice care at the Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Residence. He was born July 13, 1922 in Hamilton, the son of the late Horace R. Townsend, Sr. and Mary Hazard Townsend. He graduated in 1940 from North High School in Columbus and received a Bachelor's of Science and Agriculture from the Ohio State University in Columbus in 1946. He received a Master's of Science in Teaching in 1972 from Colby College in Waterville, Maine and pursued further graduate studies in secondary school administration at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He served in World War II with the U.S. Army 976th and 26th Field Artillery Battalions and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star decorations. He was a lifelong farmer and educator. He was also a supervisor of teachers for Highland County School District. After teaching high school science for many years in Leesburg, he established their boy's golf team. He was a member of the Wilmington Friends Meeting and was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Snow Hill Country Club. He is survived by his wife Dr. June H. Townsend, of Wilmington, whom he married Sept. 7, 1947; sons and daughters-in-law, Horace Raymond 'Ray' (Connie) Townsend, of Wilmington, Thomas Lawrence (Mary) Townsend, of Dayton, and Christopher Randolph (Melissa) Townsend, of Marietta, Ga.; daughter, Timi Jane Townsend, of Hilliard; brother, Richard H. Townsend, of Wilmington; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth (William) Pyson, of Sandusky; grandchildren, Jessica Ray Mastin, Abigail June Bills, Nick Townsend Wilson, Jason Townsend Wilson, Betsey Townsend, Anna Townsend, Grace Townsend, Kaleigh Townsend and Benjamin Townsend; and great grandchild, Erik Daniel Blair. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Esther Townsend Rader. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home in Wilmington with Everett Bailey and David Brindle officiating. Burial will be in the Martinsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Wilmington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
