He was one of the oldest men living in Wellsville, and was born May 28, 1809, in Saxe Meiningen, Germany. In 1832 he wedded Miss Margaret Fritz, a native of Saxe Meiningen, who died 18 years ago. The deceased emigrated to America, settling in Pittsburgh, PA in 1846. There he plied the vocation of a tailor for many years and had many old acquaintances in Pittsburgh. He came to Wellsville in 1868, but for several years has lived in retirement. Five children survive. They are: Mrs. Katherine Barger, Mrs. Margaret Shintelm, Webster, PA; George Hommel, Pittsburgh; Ferdinand Hommel, Ohio Pyle, PA, and Miss Mary Hommel, Wellsville. Mr. Hommel was a member of the St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran church, East Liverpool, and the funeral will be conducted by Rev. J.G. Reinartz from the residence at 2 pm Saturday, the interment being in Spring Hill cemetery.
