Born on MacKenzie homestead March 4, 1816 he was one of a family of 12 children, 10 of whom lived to maturity, he being the last to survive. Graduated from the Ohio Medical College at Cincinnati in 1844. In 1848 formed partnership with his former preceptor and brother-in-law Dr John F.Patterson. Served also as Wellsville Post Master,and in Ohio State Senate. Served in Civil War 1861-1863 as Assist. surgeon. Resigned commision after explosion impaired his hearing.
