He was aged eighty-two and a half years, and a widower, leaving no children. Mr. Steele has spent all his days in this part of the county. For years he was associated with Sanford C. Hill, of this city, who is still remembered by numbers of the older residents. Mr. Steele was considered the finest astronomer and mathematician in this portion of the State. Although by nature something of a recluse, he was known throughout the county for his wonderful faculties in those directions. He possessed one of the finest telescopes in this part of the State. He was moderately well to do, inheriting some land from his father. It will be remembered that the early part of this summer, when Mr. Steele was in his eighty-third year, he was attacked by burglars in his own house and successfully resisted them and drove them off – shooting at one of the depredators with a shotgun.
