East Liverpool Daily Crisis - 7 Feb 1901 - pg 1
Joseph Shawke died this morning at his home on North Market Street, aged 82 
years and 8 months. The deceased was born in Lisbon on the 11th of June 1819, 
and has lived in this city all of his life with exception of four years in St. 
Louis and Cincinnati. His father, Jacob Shawke, was one of Lisbon’s earliest 
settlers coming to Lisbon from York County in 1804. At the age of 12 the 
deceased entered his father’s blacksmith shop and worked steadily at that trade 
until 1889. His wife, whose maiden name was Sophia Richards, died last April. 
Since that time Mr. Shawke’s health failed rapidly. He is survived by three 
children, Charles W. Shawke, a liveryman in Lisbon, Mrs. C.H. Crook of Lisbon 
and Jacob R. Shawke of East Liverpool. Two sisters survive him, Miss Martha and 
Lucretia of Lisbon and George W. Shawke, a brother, of Madison, O.
