Tella's father Lyman McCoy, born 15 July 1895 in Tyronne, Coshocton County, Ohio, died at home in Zanesville, Muskingum County,Ohio on 05 Sept. 1948. At that time, Lyman also had been remarried and had other children. Lyman McCoy was a direct descendant of Joseph Washington McCoy, one of the earliest settlers in Coshocton County, Ohio. Tella's mother Hazel Gertrude Blackson was born April 24, 1896 in Tuscarawas Township, Coshocton County, Ohio and died December 08,1948 in San Diego County, California. She is also buried at Mount Hope Cemetery along with her husband. Hazel was married to Everett Brown then, and on her cemetery stone she is Hazel Brown. Hazel was also a direct descendent of the Michael Blackson family of Muskingum and Coshocton County early settlers. Tella lived in Coshocton County, Ohio growing up, and told the story of how he sold horse radish from door to door in order to help his mother provide for their family during the depression era while he was growing up. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II from Ohio, lied about his age to join, sent money home to his family, and saved his war bonds. He met and married Dorothy Mae Womax, (raised with the Charnock family) born October 16, 1920 in New Philadelphia, Ohio, where their first three children were born, Jerry, Gloria, and Michael. Tella and Dorothy moved to California in 1947-1948. In Spring Valley, San Diego County, California where they had bought a home. The couples last child Patrick was born there. Tella was able to obtain a civil service position with the U.S. Government in San Diego, California after his Navy years where he worked for more than twenty years until he retired. He worked on Mission Island in San Diego, California. The ship he was assigned to was the U.S.S. Rigel (a destroyer tender and flag ship for two Admirals, with four battle stars for WWII) in 1942-1945. Tella was with the MacArthur Fleet in Manilla on December 14, 1942, Solomon Islands, Phillipines in WWII's Pacific Theatre with the U.S.S. Wasp and the Saratoga fleet commanded by Admiral Halsey as part of the 3rd. fleet. In June, 1943, Tella also was on the Rigel during the battle of Midway with the 3rd fleet after Japan's Admiral Yamamoto's battleships and carriers. The Rigel had kept up with the Yorktown Carrier group and did it's repairs when it got hit in the battle. Their crew was able to keep the carrier afloat and help to save it. Near the end of the war, Tella was also about 850 nautical miles off the coast of Japan when Nagasoki was hit with an atomic bomb on a top secret mission. Tella told that all of the port holes on the ship had to be blackened, but with the covers even on the port holes that light could be seen shimmering off of the bulkhead walls of the ship from the blast even that far away. Prior to his retirement for leisure he enjoyed horse races in Baja Mexico, Tiajuana and his beer. He kept his antique car tuned and ready at a moments notice for a ride. One thing he enjoyed a good deal was having a beer while sitting on his couch close to the television watching a ball game. Tella had developed a brain tumor toward his later years before his death, and subsequently died in a nursing care facility.
