STEVEN ARNOLD DUGLYS Lommasson Born August 21 1861 Died Dec. 26, 1930 paralysis 68 years Additional Comments: It appears that Thomas Lommasson (New Jersey) and Eliza Mary Nichols (Baltimore, Maryland) were married in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1837 though I do not know whether it was Sandusky Township or the city or how they came to be married there. He was 24 and lived in New Jersey and she was 17 and lived in Baltimore. Notes on the family history by their daughter Emma Jane Lommasson Scott before her death in 1929 mentions that Thomas had a 'dry goods' business in Ohio around the time of their marriage. He was in business with a relative of Eliza's, a Newton H. Gist who had recently married Amelia Bacon (her half-first cousin). Perhaps they were visiting at the same time and had a whirlwind courtship and marriage? In the first seven years of their marriage they had 8 children, including a set of triplets. Three of these children died: their first son Henry and second daughter Elizabeth died the same day they were born. Daughter Mary Jane, one of the triplets died at age 2. In 1838-39 Eliza caught and survived small pox. They lived near the extended Lommasson clan - sometimes on the NJ side of the Delaware River in Harmony and sometimes on the Pennsylvania side of the river in Easton. I have letters in my possession between Eliza and her sisters in Baltimore in 1837 and 1839. Sometime between 1845 and 1849 they moved to Bucyrus where the remaining 6 children were born. Some of the children stayed in Ohio and some began an exodus to the territory of Washington. After Thomas's death in Bucyrus on October 15, 1898, Eliza moved to Washington where she remained until her death in 1908. During their time in Bucyrus, Thomas is listed in census records as a mechanist or carpenter. I have in my possession warranty deeds from Jefferson Norton et. al. on 22 Jul 1865 to Eliza Mary for land that includes (according to insurance papers in 1895 I also have) “a dwelling and barn on the west part of outlot #195, east side of Cemetery Street.” Eliza was highly educated and came from a Baltimore family with some social standing and resources. Both of her parents - Pearson Nichols (son of Gen. Moses Nichols and Hannah Eaton of Boston) and Sarah Ann Pratt (daughter of Roger and Patience Pratt of Baltimore)- had died by the time she was 13 or 14. When she married at age 17 she received a small inheritance of nearly $2000 (I have the documents in my possesion) which may have been the source of her land investment. Three men of this family served with the Ohio volunteers in the Civil War, including son Richard Pearson Lommasson who died at age 15 near Washington DC. Craw Co Gen Soc Military Records of Crawford Co has this entry from Ohio's Rank and file in the War of the Rebellion: Lommasson, Richard, e at Bucyrus May 2, 1864 Co E 136th OVI died near Washington DC Aug 1864, buried at Bucyrus, Lommasson, Thos, e at Bucyrus July 3 1862 Co K 45th OVI and Lommasson Wm, e at Bucyrus Jan 1865 Co C 186th OVI dis with Regt. Also a burial record for Lommason Richard d 8 Sep 1864 also bur at Sect G Lot 003 "Died in Service" This is the plot purchased by the family. I also have receipts in my possession for Oakwood Cemetery, lot # 3-4, Section G, containing 169 square feet. I suspect this is also where son John Pratt Lommasson who died at age 7 in 1861 may be buried.
