Heil, 62 former 3d Battalion chief of the Cleveland Fire Department, died yesterday at his home in North Olmsted. "He had bone cancer and retired in 1977 because of his illness. "Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Richard Catholic Church, 26855 Lorain Rd., North Olmsted "Mr. Heil joined the fire department in 1942 at Hook and Ladder No. 1 at W.3d St. and St. Clair Ave. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1949, to captain in 1956 and battalion chief in 1958. He was stationed at W. 117th St. and Linnett Ave. from 1970 until his retirement. "Before becoming a fireman he was an inspection supervisor for the National Carbon Co. "He was a graduate of Cathedral Latin School and a staff sergeant in the Army in World War II. "He was past president of the Cleveland Fire Chiefs Association and a member of the association's golf club and bowling league. "He was a past chairman of the fire department's safety and clothing committee. He belonged to the Holy Name societies of the fire department and of St. Richard Church. "Surviving are his wife Ruth; sons, Loiis J. and Michael J.; daughters, Frances K., Donna Gilbride and Kathy; seven grandchildren; a sister and two brothers."
