McCann, Grandson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cleveland Press, March 11, 1940 Charles McCann, New York Central Executive, Dies Developed Many Improvements for Railroads as System's Chief Draftsman During his many years as chief draftsman for the New York Central Railroad here, Charles H. McCann developed many of the improvements that have advanced modern railroading. One of the outstanding accomplishments for which he was cited in the railroad field was the perfection of the system to raise and lower water scoops, allowing locomotives to take on water while traveling at full speed. He also perfected the trailing truck or booster which enables a locomotive to start with very heavy loads. Mr. McCann, father of the Rev. Fr. Charles J. McCann, assistant pastor of St. Philomena's Catholic Church, died suddenly of a heart attack yesterday at his home, 559 E. 109th street. He was born in Norwalk. O., and came to Cleveland 40 years ago. He retired in 1938 after 42 years with the New York Central System. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth M. McCann; Father McCann and another son, Robert L. His only daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Horan, died two years ago. Mr. McCann was 67 years old. Father McCann will celebrate a solemn high requiem Mass for his father at 10 a.m.. Wednesday, in St. Aloysius' Catholic Church. He will be assisted by the Rev. Fr. John J. Reynolds of St. Anthony's Home for Boys, and the Rev. Fr. John Koch of St. Thomas Aquinas' Catholic Church. ==========OH-FOOTSTEPS============
