He was raised by his maternal grampa Henry Black who served in the Civil War along with 5 of his sons, losing one to the War. Please see referenced biography below for Frank E Black. Henry Black born PA 1809 married 1834 Perry Co OH, Susanna Carey, from DE. Henry and Susanna Black had a large family to include 4 daughters (Rachel; Elizabeth; Matilda, and Mary Jane). Rachel Black married James Firestone. Matilda A Black married James Davis. Mary Jane Black b 1853 d 1854. Elizabeth Black born 1838 married 1872 John C Sleichter; she died in 1874 and he died in 1879 at Hardin Co OH. It appears that Elizabeth had one child from this union, an Eddie Sleichter b 1872 who is found in California as Charles Edward Sleicther married to Minnie Kennedy with child Ray W Sleichter. Eddie worked for the railroad and was kin to Frank E Church Black. Upon maturity, Frank E Church took the surname of Black. His death certificate lists his father as James (perhaps stepfather or?). Frank E (Church) Black married Margaret A Currrent in 1885 at Ft Wayne IN and had a son, Clinton E Black (my grampa) born 1886 OH; they went onto California in 1891. Frank bought land there in 1892, 1905, and 1908. Frank E Black died in 1927, at San Diego CA. Black has won for him many friends, while his business ability has given him a competence among the the citizens of Tulare Co CA. Liberal, broad-minded and enterprising, he takes a keen interest in the public affairs of the community, and at the same time gives his attention to the advancement of his own welfare. A native of Ohio, he was born near Maxville, Perry County on July 19, 1863. He was reared in the home of his maternal grandfather, Henry Black, who with his five sons, served in the Sixty-Second Regiment Ohio Infantry during the Civil War, one son dying in service. His education was received through the medium of the public schools, which he attended for a short time, but became dependent upon his own efforts while still a lad. When sixteen years of age he secured a place as section hand, then became a brakeman on the Ohio Central Railroad, September 26, 1884, his run being between Bucyrus, Corning, Columbus and Toledo. In the spring of 1885 he was employed in the same capacity on the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad, between Fort Wayne IN and Crestline OH. He remained with that company for six years, when in 1891, he came to California and secured employment with the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, as a brakeman, working out of Tulare. In June 1894, he was promoted to conductor, running out of Fresno and November 1, 1901, he took his present run, which is between Portersville and Mendota, going twice over the road each day, a distance of two hundred and thirteen miles traveled. He is a very successful railroad man, stands high with the officials, and enjoys the confidence and esteem of the traveling public. He has been in the work for twenty years and has never had an accident. In Fort Wayne Indianna, Mr. Frank Black was united in marriage in 1885 with Marguerite Current, a native of that vicinity, and the daughter of Sylvester S Current, who was employed in the car shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for thirty-eight years, when he retired from active duties. Mrs. Black was brought up in Fort Wayne, where she was educated. They have one child living, Clinton Ellsworth Black. Mr. Black owns a stock farm on White River, thirty- five miles from Portersville, which is their mountain home. He was made a Mason in Portersville Lodge No. 303 and belongs to the Portersville Chapter, R.A.M., of this place, and Visalia Commandery, K.T. He is a demitted member of the Knights of Pythias and a member of the Order of Railroad Conductors No. 404, of Kern City, and politically is a stanch Democrat." "Maggie" was the daughter of Sylvester Sylvanus Current 1833 OH - 1906 IN and Alice (West) Current 1842 OH - 1876 IN. Alice was the daughter of Clement West Jr and Rhoda (Johnston) West. Clement's father, Clement Sr served in the Rev War and came from MASS NY PA onto OH and IN and MI. Clinton Ellsworth Black 4/10/1886 OH - 10/31/1973 CA (son of Frank and Marguerite Current Black); married 5/1/1912 Clackamus Co Oregon, Miss Ophelia May Robacker 6/1/1892 OH - 4/3/1919 OR and had three children: Robert Clinton Black 1913 OR - 1985 CA; James W 1915 OR -1932 CA; and Ellen May 1917 OR - 2004 VA. Ophelia was the daughter of Samuel J Robacker 1864 OH - 1945 OR and Mattie (Aungst) Robacker 1867 OH - 1940 OR. Samuel was the son of George J and Sarah (Eckerts) Robacker. Mattie was the adopted daughter of John and Elizabeth (Crunkilton) Aungst from OH. Clinton E Black (sheet metal worker for 11th Naval District of CA) upon the loss of his wife, Ophelia remarried in 1929 Nana Lois Bresler Biddlecome (1888 IN - 1956 CA) and had little Nana b 1930. NOTE: Frank E and Margaret A Current Black are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, San Diego CA. Frank Black's son and his 2nd wife (Clinton E and Nana L Bresler Biddlecome Black) are buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, San Diego CA; Clinton Black's first wife Ophelia May Robacker Black is buried in Oregon next to her mother, Mattie Aungst Robacker, at Mountain View Cemetery (Clackamus Co) Oregon City OR. Sylvanus (Sylvester) Current born March 22, 1833 Trumbull OH near Warren (died Feb 23, 1906 Ft Wayne IN - buried Lindenwood Cem IN) was a school teacher and corporal in Civil War, Co H 13th IN Vol. ~ he was also charter member of the Calvary United Brethren Church and the G.A.R.. He also worked for the Penn Railroad for over 38 years. He was son of Matthew and Elizabeth Current from PA onto Ohio . Susannah Carey Black was born DE about 1814 and died 1892 at Hardin Co OH. She was the daughter of Branson or Burton and Rachel Crawford Carey; he son of John. Susanna Carey Black's husband, Henry Black was born 1809 PA (they married 1834 at Perry Co OH) and he died 1879 at Hardin Co OH. Henry as son of William and Elizabeth Black from PA onto Perry Co OH.
