That we well were acquainted for 15 years with Mary Shields, formerly Fogle, first wife of Patrick Shields, decd. late soldier of the war of 1812, whose widow, Celina Shields, is now making application for pension under a recent act of Congress on account of his service in said war. That said Mary Shields died at Eaton, Preble County on the ______ day of September A.D., 1833 or 4. We further declare that we have no interest direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim for pension. R. D. Springer D. Robeson William Nealeigh his Abraham X Shields Mark Sworn to before me and subscribed in my presence this 31st day of Oct. A.D. 1878 by William Nealeigh and Abraham Shields whom I certify to be respectable person entitled to full faith and credit and to whom the foregoing affidavit was read and fully explained. I am in no way interested in this claim. R. D. Springer, Notary Public, D.C.O." [William NEALEIGH was son-in-law & husband of Rachel SHIELDS, dau/o Patrick & Mary (FOGLE) SHIELDS. Abraham SHIELDS was s/o Patrick & Mary (FOGLE) SHIELDS. Seems to be a discrepancy in the birthdate of Abraham SHIELDS. Abraham was said to be 84y at the time of his death according to an obituary in 1900 which would make him born in 1816, yet according to the above affidavit he was born in 1821. However, if he knew his mother for only 15y as the affidavit indicates, and his mother died in 1834, then Abraham was born in 1819 being 15y of age at her death. Celina was Selina (FREEMAN) BOYD, 1st wife & widow of Thomas BOYD & 2nd wife & widow of Patrick SHIELDS. Patrick SHIELDS, s/o Daniel & Mary (???) SHIELDS (Irish immigrants), b 1784 Ireland or on board ship to U.S.A. & d 1877 Darke Co., OH. Birthdate & parents of Mary (FOGLE) SHIELDS is unknown at this time. Patrick & Mary were married in 1806 place unknown. Marriage could have taken place in Butler Co., OH where the SHIELDS family lived or nearby Hamilton Co., OH. ash]
