The 1849 map of Harlem Township shows three Cockrell farms west of State Route 605 and north of Woodtown Road. James Cockerell (spelled with the added "e" on the 1849 map) owned a farm a bit north of Woodtown Road that ran to the west from Route 605. It butted into a farm that ran north from Woodtown Road that was owned by Edward Cockrell (it's impossible to tell whether that name was spelled with the added "e".) The next farm to the west was owned by James Cockrell (without the "e"). The farms were sold, probably several times; the old cemetery became part of a cattle pasture, and the location of the cemetery was lost. Phyllis and Bob Davidson (a surveyor) along with nearby resident Betty Kenney found the general location of the cemetery several years ago - located on what is now private property in a fairly recent housing development. On April 6, 2010, Donna Ferrell, a Cockrell descendant, Betty Kenney, and Vicki Tieche, with permission from the property owner, attempted to find the old cemetery and were successful in finding parts of at least two gravestones, widely scattered over the years. One badly weathered piece showed evidence of having been inscribed, but other than that, no names of interments were found. Donna Ferrell had put together a list of who she knows is buried in Cockrell Cemetery and who she believes may be buried there. It appears all the deaths were in about 1851, probably from the cholera epidemic that affected the township. DEFINITE BURIAL IN COCKRELL CEMETERY Edward D. Cockrell, 1793-1851, married Matilda Elizabeth Ann Titus (also known as Anna who is buried in Lyons Cemetery, Burt County, Nebraska). Edward Cockrell died in 1851. PROBABLE BURIAL IN COCKRELL CEMETERY Emma Cockrell ( 1845- ), daughter of Edward. Shown on 1850 census but not in father?s 1851 will so probably died in 1851 and probably in Cockrell Cemetery. Susannah Cockrell married a Mr. Polten. Unknown burial after 1859-1860. Susannah Poulson (Polton in some documents) and children may be in the Cockrell Cemetery, too. John and Susannah Poulson with children Charles, Edward, and Sarah are in the 1850 census in Harlem Twp. but have not been found in later census records.
