I am getting along quite well. your letter was the first one that I have had for over a month. I suppose you have received it before this. you said in your letter that you heard I was killed that is only a mistake in the Printer. no indeed I am all right yet but I don't know but what it will come my turn next. but I live in hope that I may be spared a little longer length a soldiers life is very uncertain. you said that the minds of the people were that this war would never be ended by fighting. I think we are in a pretty good way for it now we have had the Jonnies on the scedaddle quite a while and if we keep on a little while longer we will have them jumping over in the Gulf of Mexico. The only way to settle this rebellion is to whip them and conquer them we will and that before long. Well Annie, I guess I have expressed my sentiments so well I will leave the subject to your Decision and write about something more important if I can think of anything to write. I heard she was very sick and George was very attentive to her. he would go to see her five times a day and write to her between time. if that is the case I thing she ought to get well, don't you? I feel very sorry for the Poor little thing. I hope she will ______ soon which I think she has are this. Well I guess I have written all the news. I will have to close by asking you to forgive me of my foolishness and uninteresting letter. for that is all I can write these days. I remain as ever your true friend and well wisher John Give my respects to all inquiring friends if there be any. Especially to Miss Cash_____ Harris or any other ___. You must not let her see this or she will give me the ___. J John Aller To Sattie Oh Sattie Dear when this you see I hope you will remember me although I know you always do and I as well remember you John Sat: Just Play one a time on your music box Additional Comments: This was written to Ann Phillians and her sister Sarah (Sattie). I have made minor spelling and punctuation changes to aid in clarity. The Phillians family lived in Delaware Co., OH at the time. I have put "____" in places where I could not make out the text. I have found records for a couple different John Aller's who fought for the Union from Ohio. It looks like he was either part of the 88th infantry or the 66th infantry, but we may never know. At some point I may be able to establish the geographic area from where they pulled their troops and have a better idea.
