Mr. Smale had been hauling tile for Mr. A.B. Main, and had just finished loading his wagon when the accident occurred, no one knows just how. Mr. Smale, from all that can be learned, climbed on his wagon, starting the horses as he did so. He slipped, and his head fell under the broad tire of the heavily loaded wagon. He was pushed along several feet by the wheel, and then the heavy load passed directly over his face, which was badly mashed out of shape, and showed that death was practically instantaneous. The expression of his face indicates clearly that death came without his realization of the awful way in which it came. His hands were bruised up, but otherwise there were no body injuries. The whole sad affair was over in an instant, before anyone in the yard was aware of what was happening, and was witnessed by none of the employees of the company, some of whom were not far distant, and rushed at once to give any possible aid. The remains were taken to Miller's undertaking rooms, and the sad news made known to the members of the family. It is a sad coincidence that the death follows just one week later the death of his brother, Mr. Edwin Smale, for many years in the employ of the V.T. Hills Co. For the one brother, death came following a long illness; to the other it came with singular swiftness. Mr. Smale left home Monday morning in the best of health. Members of the family think, however, in looking back over the past few days, that he may have had some presentment of its coming. At the time of his brother's death he remarked that, he would not be here long, and Sunday he seemed unusually anxious to see his grandchildren. The deceased man was born July 15, 1844, in Greenwich township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and was, therefore 65 years of age, and has since resided here. He was a teamster by occupation, and for fifteen years was in the employ of the Delaware Chair Company. Later he was janitor at the Children's Home for several years. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Lucetta Risher, who died in 1903. His second wife, who was Miss Jennie Griffith, survives him and there are two daughters and one son, Mrs. Fred Engeroff, Miss Clara Smale and Mr. Clarence Smale, of the Girl's Industrial Home. Like his brother, Mr. Smale was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church from its earliest organization, and was a faithful member up to the time of his death. Funeral announcement will be made later.
