He was born Jan 12, 1953, in Delaware to Charles and Marjorie (Volk) Smale, who are both deceased. He was a bachelor and visited a host of friends on a regular basis, especially at dinner time, where he was always welcomed as a member of the family. He worked for many years as a lifeguard at Eckel’s Lake and in the 1980s he and his sister Amy founded “Scenic Landscapes,” a local landscaping company whose efforts made many places in Delaware far more beautiful. After Amy’s death, he continued the business until recently, when he became employed by the Glenross golf course, formerly Tanglewood. He loved nature, riding his motorcycle, target shooting, history and every dog he ever met, especially Jake, Jesse and Montana. He will be sorely missed by his family, extended family and a whole host of loving friends. He is survived by two sisters, Rebecca (Joe) Hanson of Massachusetts and Cindy (Ron) Bartlett of California; a brother-in-law; Phil McGrew of Delaware; a nephew, Spencer Haney of Arizona; two (from the heart) adopted daughters, Tonya James and Shawna Stewart of Cardington, and their children, Mariah Stone, Hailea Maceyko, Kora James, Bradley David Landon and Kortney James, whom David regarded in every respect as his grandchildren; several aunts, uncles and cousins, including Steve Sealey, who was also his best friend and the subject of many recalled childhood and young adult memories. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger sister, Amy Smale McGrew; and his faithful dog, Cuervo. A memorial service will be held sometime this fall.
