Tammie Orr Brown The Rushville Times December 9, 1897 WELKER, Mrs. Eliza- On Friday MRS. ELIZA WELKER was up and around the house, and though she seemed more worse than usual she did not complain, other than to say she felt tired. She retired early in the evening and awoke about the usual time next morning and stated to her grand-child, MISS. CARRIE LAWLER, that she felt badly and that she would try to sleep again. She seemed to sleep and MISS CARRIE, who was in the room, thought she would not disturb her. When breakfast was ready MRS. LAWLER went into wake her and found her dead-she had fallen asleep and died peacefully while she slept. MRS. WELKER was born at Millwood, Knox County, Ohio, Aug. 16th, 1811. Her maiden name was ELIZA GIFFEN and she is the last of the eleven children born to ROBERT GIFFEN and wife. She was married to REV. JOHN WELKER in 1829; was the mother of six children, three of whom have gone before and three are left to mourn her loss. She has been a widow for thirty years and an invalid for ten. Joining the M.E. church when sixteen years of age she has lived a christian life for seventy years. Always of a generous and kind disposition, she was ever ready to share the grief of others and partake in the work of caring for the sick, helping the needy as far as her means would allow, and providing for the comforts of others without thought of self. She was dearly loved by her friends and respected by all who knew her. Her life has been long and interesting. In her early years she shared the hardships and adversities of the early settlers, and until the last had recollections of events which took place during her childhood. coming west in 1858 with her husband and children they first settled on the site where the city of Cedar Rapids, Mich., now is. They moved to Astoria, Fulton county, Ill., in 1850, and the next spring to Rushville, where she has lived ever since. Funeral services were held at the residence of her daughter, MRS. G.W. LAWLER, on Monday at 1 o'clock, conducted by REVS. J.W. MILLER and JOHN KNOWLES. The remains were interred in the Serrott cemetery, south of Rushville. ___________________________________ The Rushville Times November 11, 1897 LAWLER, WASHINGTON M.--WASHINGTON M. LAWLER was born in Zanesville, Ohio, January 14, 1835, and died November 5, 1897, aged nearly 63 years. He came with his parents to Schuyler county, Illinois, in 1839, and settled on the farm on which he died. He was married to LILLIE BURNSIDE, March 27, 1863. To them were born five children, who, with their afflicted mother, survive; sadly to mourn the irreparable loss of a loving husband and kind, affectionate father. He was a good neighbor and friend; was greatly esteemed and highly respected by all who knew him. His last illness was painful and severe, yet borne with utmost fortitude and entire submission, and in humble reliance on his heavenly father's will. The community among whom sixty years of his life was spent will sadly miss him. On Sunday following his death funeral services were held at the family residence, and although the rain fell steadily the attendance of relatives, neighbors and friends filled to overflowing every room in the house. Interment was in the familycemetery on the old home farm, where, with his father and mother, and other relatives of his younger and riper years, he awaits the coming of the eternal morning. Brother, true friend, hail and farewell! __________________________________ Rushville Times July 6, 1938 ROBERT B. GLENN Robert B.
