She was the daughter of Samuel Monterville McGruder and Mary Louisa Shaffer. Monterville was born September 29, 1846 in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. He was the son of William L. and Sarah M. McGruder. Monterville was also the nephew of Major General John Bankhead McGruder, well known for his service during the Mexican and Civil wars. Louisa was the daughter of Dr. Jacob and Sarah (Inks) Shaffer. “Col. Monterville McGruder was a commissioned officer in Stonewall Jackson's brigade and served almost exclusively in secret service as a Confederate spy.” At the close of the war, he was released from the prison at Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio. He settled in Blacklick and practiced his father’s trade of boot maker. This is where he met and married Mary Louisa Shaffer on November 22, 1865. Louisa McGruder died February 26, 1874. She is buried in the Seceder Cemetery (aka Old United Presbyterian Cemetery), Truro Twp., Franklin Co., OH. Monterville married Amelia C. Harris on April 11, 1875 in Licking Co., OH. Amy was born February 1855 in Hebron, Licking Co., OH. She was the daughter of Thomas and Lydia Harris. Thomas was a descendent of John Harris, founder of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Thomas died when Amy was two years old. Lydia married Elijah Durfey on August 16, 1859. Elijah played a major roll in raising Amy and her sister Martha. In the spring of 1877, the family moved to Austin, Travis Co., TX. Amy’s first child, Paul David McGruder, born January 29, 1877 in Blacklick, Franklin Co., OH, died there on May 23, 1878. He is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery. In November 1878, they moved to Pettis Co., MO, and one year later settled in Hugesville. Addie’s brother, Mark Austin McGruder, and sister, Mayme Belle McGruder, were born there on September 16, 1879 and September 1883 respectively. Mark became a lawyer and law author. He was also author of the 1919 edition of The History of Pettis County, Missouri. Mayme married Norman M. Gilbert and raised a family. Addie returned to Columbus, Ohio between 1880 and 1887. The city directories show her as a cashier and assistant bookkeeper for the J. P. Weisman Company. She lived with her uncle, Dr. William H. H. Shaffer. In 1893, Addie married Stephen Stowell Gaines. Stephen was born December 19, 1863 in Blacklick, Franklin Co., OH. He was the son of Phillip Walton and Permelia (Stowell) Gaines. Permelia died giving birth to Stephen and he was raised by his grandmother, Sarah (Mills) Stowell, the widow of Stephen Stowell. Stephen Gaines was a telegraph operator. Addie and Stephen remained married until his death on December 9, 1926. On November 6, 1928, Addie married Albert Absalom Rhodes in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. Albert was born May 5, 1862 in Havens Corners, Franklin Co., OH. He was the son of Henry J. and Rebecca F. (Scott) Rhodes. He was the widow of Abigail A. Clouse who died in 1907. Albert had 6 children from his marriage to Abbie. Addie died December 6, 1934 in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. She is buried in the Silent Home Cemetery, Truro Twp., Franklin Co., OH. Albert died in 1941. Monterville died November 23, 1904 and Amy died November 24, 1911. Monterville and Amy are buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Sedalia, Pettis Co., MO. Addie never had children.
