So Athey, who lived alone, set the butt of a shotgun on the floor, put his head over the muzzle and pushed the tricker (sic) with a stick. This was Sheriff Harry Paul's theory Thursday when he found Athey with his head blown off in his home, a shotgun by his side. Athey's body was discovered by a son, William, also a Shadeville resident. Despondency was declared the motive for Athey's act. The body was taken to Denton & Donaldson mortuary, 318 E. Town St. Coroner Murphy, who was called, rendered a verdict of suicide. Athey leaves two other sons, Thomas of Shadeville and Andrew J. Athey of Dublin; two daughters, Mrs. Edward Schawb of Canal Winchester and Mrs. Bert Harris of Shadesville; two brothers and a half sister.
