JACOB LAUER DROPS DEAD ON SOUTH FRONT STREET.
Deceased Was One of the Old Citizens of the City and the Grandfather of Ex-
Councilman Chas. Lauer.
Jacob Lauer, one of the old citizens of Columbus, dropped dead on South Front 
street about 5 o’clock Wednesday evening. The old gentleman was 85 years old and 
was the grandfather of Charles Lauer, the Republican candidate for sheriff, and 
has lived in Columbus since it was a village of 2,000 inhabitants. It is 
supposed hi death was due to disease of the heart as he has been under treatment 
for that ailment for some time past.
He was taking a walk and when in front of the saloon at No. 13 South Front 
street, reeled and fell to the sidewalk. Some men who were passing picked him up 
and carried him onto the porch at No. 13, where he died in 3 or 4 minutes 
afterwards. Dr. Gunsaulus, who was known to be Mr. Lauer’s physician, was 
summoned but the old gentleman was dead when he arrived. Dr. Gunsaulus stated 
that Mr. Lauer’s death was not unexpected to himself and the friends, who knew 
of his condition.
The remains were removed to No. 61 South Scioto street, where deceased had for a 
number of years been making his home with his granddaughter, Mary Sheridan. A 
telegram was at once sent to Charles Lauer, who is away on the city council 
excursion, he having formerly been a member of that body. He is expected home 
this evening.
The remains were this morning removed to the residence of Charles Lauer, 112 
North Front street, where the funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. Deceased 
was born in Diesburg, Baden, Germany, February 2, 1810, and emigrated to America 
at the age of 24. In 1834 he married Cathrina Woehrle and located in Columbus, 
where he begun work at his trade of tailor. He once had a tailor shop on West 
Broad street and afterwards on State street.
He once owned the propety [sic] where the Grand Central Hotel now stands. When 
he purchased it in 1849 there was no building on the lot. Mr. Lauer erected a 
three story brick business block there which was replaced by the hotel after he 
sold it. The wife of the deceased died several years ago. He was the father of 9 
children, only 3 of whom are living. They are John Lauer, a plasterer; William 
Lauer, formerly for many years an Adams’ Express company messenger, now in 
business on the north side; Mrs. Louise Seeley, of Sidney. Deceased was a member 
of the German Lutheran church. Interment at Greenlawn. Acting Coroner Roach is 
conducting an inquest.
