INDEPENDENCE DAILY REPORTER Monday, August 21, 1905, page 1 --------------           END WAS PEACEFUL            ~~~~~~~~~~~ Mrs. Harriet Shults Answered the final Summons Yesterday.             ~~~~~~~~~~~       At the residence of Mrs George T. Scranton yesterday morning at 11 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. Scranton's mother, Mrs. Harriet C. Shults. The deceased was over 81 years of age and had been ill for about six weeks when final summons came.       Mrs. Shults was born near Utica, N. Y., March 14, 1824. She was marred to Elijah Shults and for a number of years resided in Ohio where seven children came to bless the union. In 1859 Mr. and Mrs. Shults removed to Emporia, Kan., where one more child was born. In September 1860 Mr. Shults died. His wife continued to reside in Emporia until 1871 when she removed to Liberty and resided with her sons at that place. In 1885 she came to Independence and made her home with her only daughter, Mrs. George T. Scranton, where she has resided until death.     About six weeks ago the old lady was taken ill with complication of diseases which at her advanced age made recovery impossible. She passed quietly away Sunday morning surrounded by members of her family. Conscious to the very last she calmly bade her family goodbye, and, sustained by her faith that had been her steadfast companion throughout her life she laid down the burden of years and fell asleep.       Mrs. Shults leaves four children, Mrs. Geo. T. Scranton and John Shults of this city and Elijah an Scott Shults of Liberty, Dr W.W. Flora of Colorado Springs was present at the death of his grandmother, who was a mother to him since he had been a tot of three years until he had reached early manhood.       Mrs. Shults had all her life been a member of the Methodist church and funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p. m. from the First M. E. church, Rev. Smith officiating." Additional Comments: Harriet Catharine (Sterling) Shults was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Indepndence, Kansas. Harriet had eight known children, the last, Henry, after death of husband, her fourth being Mary Elizabeth Shults, who married John A Flora, 10 Feb 1867 in Lyon County, Kansas, they having four known children, one being Dr W. W. Flora mentioned in obituaries, before her early demise, 9 Nov 1874, buried in Americus cemetery with one month old daughter Jeanie G.
