DEATH OF MRS. JENNIE TOMPKINS Last Friday forenoon Mrs. Jennie Tompkins was discovered at her home, lying on the floor in an unconscious condition. Parties on calling at the house the day before found the house locked and no noise coming from the inside, although it was known Mrs. Tompkins was at home. This state of affairs existed the next morning, and thinking something was wrong, a door was forced open, and on entering she was found as above stated. Investigation showed she had taken morphine, evidently with suicidal intent. Prompt medical assistance restored her to consciousness. She absolutely refused to take any medicine or nourishment of any kind. Her physical condition was so weak that under such circumstances it could not be long before life would be extinct. She lingered until 1:30 Sunday morning. Grief over the death of her son, Arthur, undoubtedly caused Mrs. Tompkins to become insane, and take the fatal drug. Her life work and aim was devoted to Arthur's advancement, and after his death she seemed to have no desire to live. It certainly is a sad case. Mrs. Tompkins was born in Fulton county, and was 49 years, 2 months and 10 days old. She had been a resident of Fayette for over ten years. Her death is mourned by three sisters and one brother. The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church, of which she was a member, on Monday at 1:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. B. Leonard. Additional Comments: [additional research indicates she was Lucy Jennie Tompkins, 2nd wife of Lyman Tompkins, mother of Arthur Tompkins. The 1880 census lists Lymon Tompkins, Lucy J. Tompkins, Abbott Tompkins and Arthur Tompkins in Fulton Co. Lyman Tompkins who apparently had a son Abbott with his 1st wife Abbie - was residing in Maumee, Lucas County on the 1870 census.] File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/oh/fulton/obits/t/tompkins1140gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ohfiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
