At the age of 16 years he united with the Caesar's Creek Church (Old School Baptist) and in 1839 he married Elizabeth McConnell of nearby Paintersville. He was commissioned Captain of the 5th Company, 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade and 5th Division of the Ohio Militia in 1841: Commission signed by Thomas Corwin, Governor of Ohio. He held several township offices in Greene County until 1867. He then moved to Highland County, Ohio where he purchased a small farm known as the Achor Farm. He and Elizabeth lived there a number of years and then moved to Willettsville, Ohio where he died on February 9, 1896.
