In 1848 a formal deed was recorded, stating that the land be used for ?education, burying, and religious services.? The church and cemetery are named in honor of Jacob Aley. One cemetery marker bears the year 1813 as burial date for a member of the Aley family. The Aley Church heritage dates back to July 22, 1810 when Christian Newcomer preached at the home of Lewis Kemp, a neighbor of Aley?s. In 1813, the worshipers became part of the Miami Conference of the United Brethren church, assigned to the Beavercreek Circuit. In 1837-1838 a 25 x 30 foot building was erected on the land set aside on Jacob Aley?s farm. Benjamin Wheat was the first assigned pastor in 1843. From 1813 to 1946 the congregation belonged to the United Brethren in Christ Church. A denominational merger in 1946 placed the congregation with the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Finally, in 1968 that denomination merged with the Methodist Church and the congregation took the name of Aley United Methodist Church. Regular religious services have been held on Jacob Aley?s plot of land for almost 200 years. In 1896, the cemetery portion of the plot of land was deeded to the Aley Cemetery Association, which was incorporated in the State of Ohio. Named on the incorporation papers were: William H. Engle, Emma G. Warner, G. M. Craft, W. J. Engle, and Arthur Gerlaugh. By 1961, trustees of the Aley Cemetery Association decided that maintenance of the cemetery could be better managed by the Beavercreek Township Trustees, so the articles of incorporation for the cemetery association were cancelled and the cemetery land was deeded to the township. The cemetery association board members serving at that time were: Harry Miller, Howard Miller, Beth Kundert, Cramer Mahon, and Chester Koogler. When the City of Beavercreek was incorporated in 1980, the township transferred responsibility for the cemetery to the city. The Aley Cemetery is now maintained by the City of Beavercreek, Department of Parks, Recreation, and Culture with offices in the city?s Municipal Building, 1368 Research Park Drive, Beavercreek, Ohio 45432- 2818; Phone (937) 427-5514. The city employs a cemetery sexton with office in the Mt. Zion Cemetery Park, phone (937) 427-5549. Aley Cemetery records are kept in both offices mentioned. The Aley Cemetery grave marker inscription records compiled in this document are the result of a survey made in June, 2003 by members of Aley UMC. The grave sites are recorded in rows, with row one (1) the furthest west boundary; and within a row from north, nearest Kemp Road, to south. The survey information was updated to be current November, 2004. Reference was made to a 1975 compilation in attempt to reconcile inscriptions that are no longer legible. Some of the compiled information was taken from record cards held in the city office. An asterisk (*) indicates that the source of information was the burial record cards. ========================================================================================================================================================= LAST NAME FIRST NAME DATES ON STONE COMMENTS (* date birth or death from burial card) ROW ========================================================================================================================================================= Adams Nicolas James Apr. 1, 1993 - Feb. 3, 1995 "Come unto me all ye that labour …" Matt II: 28 23 Aley Abraham d. 7/18/1883 aged 78y, 1m, 23d 10 Aley Anna b. 1796* - d. 6/13/1844 aged 48y, 2m, 18d; consort of Jacob 10 Aley Catharine D.
