His parentage was of the Scottish nobility which naturally perpetuated strong family pride. As soon as he reached the age of 15, he enlisted in the Union army and served the last fifteen months of the Civil War. At it's close, he moved to Monmouth, Illinois where he served as an apprentice in a carpenter shop. After learning the trade, he worked in Kansas City, Kansas for two years. John Carothers was known as an honest, straightforward citizen and was identified with various enterprises for the betterment of the community. He served as member of the school board and city council and has proven a faithful, public servant. The flag for which he fought and under which he served as a citizen had no more loyal son than he. He was a stauch Odd Fellow and perhaps no one desired to lived up to the principles of that fraternity more than he. Men say he was an unfailing friend to those with whom he made friendships. He was received into membership of the Methodist Episcolpal church on May 18, 1895 by the Reverand Samuel Carothers, a distant relative, who was pastor of the Methodist church at that time. He was a liberal contributor to the new church building. The funeral was held at the residence at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Rev. Alva O. Brown, pastor, in charge and assisted by Rev. Wilkins of the Baptist church. John Carothers was buried in the High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry, Missouri. The church and community join in extending sympathy to the sorrowing widow and family.
