He was the youngest of seven children. His siblings were: John L.(born 1814 Ireland, died 1826 Ireland); William L. (born September 26, 1816 Ireland, died July 16, 1893 Guernsey, Ohio); Martha Ann (born 1818 Ireland, died 1895); George (born 1822 Ireland, died February 1858 Guernsey, Ohio); Margaret (born 1824 Ireland, married a Miller in Ireland, died before 1847 in Ireland); and Samuel Edward (born March 24, 1826 Down, Ireland, married Eliza Ann Keowan 1856 Ohio, died May 28, 1902 Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio). John em​igrated about 1847 with parents to Guernsey County, Ohio. Found in the 1850 census living at Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio, page 445, family # 883 - John Carothers, age 68; Agnes Carothers, age 68; both born in Ireland although the Carothers originally lived in Scotland. Also counted: George, 28, farmer; Bella, wife of George, age 24, born in Ohio; Samuel age 24, born in Ireland; John Miller age 5, born in Ireland and John Peasley age 22, born in Ireland. John married Mary A​. Gill on October 28, 1857 at​ Guernsey, Ohio. The couple had 3 children: Martha Jane (born 1859 Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio, died April 22, 1876 Guernsey, Ohio); George Miller Carothers (born 1862 Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio (Not 100% sure of this date) and James G​ill Carothers (born August 14, 1874 Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio, married Sarah Belle Davis January 18, 1912 Ohio, died December 1949 Guernsey, Ohio.) In an affidavit for John S. Miller, John P. Carothers, age 61, testifies as to John's disability. Ties in with the age listed on the census. John Peasley Carothers signed these affidavits with an "X". Found John in the 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 censuses living at Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio: 1860: John Carothers, 25, Male, Farmer from Ireland; Mary age 19 from Ohio and Martha, age 1 from Ohio. July 6, 1870: Dwelling # 60, Roll 1206, page 466-467: John age 39, unable to read/write. Mary age 29, Martha age 11 and George Miller age 8. 1880: John P. Crothers age 51, wife Mary age 41, son George M. age 18 and son James G. age 5. 1900: Farmer: John Corothers 70, Mary A Corothers 60, James G Corothers 23. John Peasley Carothers died on January 16, 19​08 at Guernsey, Ohio; cause of death was paralysis. He is probably buried in Guernsey County, Ohio. Additional Comments: Censuses were transcribed as found, obvious spelling errors were not corrected. It is extremely difficult to research the Carothers family in Ireland, Scotland and the United States as there are many, many men with the same names living at about the same time in the same areas.
