Carothers was born September 26, 1816 at Fermanagh, Ireland to Lord John Carothers and Lady Mary Agnes. He married Sarah Dales on August 21, 1839 at Ballysorphy, Hillsborough, County Down, Ireland. They had 2 children in Ireland: John (born abt. 1840, died abt 1843/44) and William Dales Carothers (born September 9, 1843 Ireland, died May 28, 1865 U.S, Civil War casualty). William and Sarah and son William Dales emigrated to Guernsey County, Ohio late 1846 although there are sources that claim 1847. William was a farmer. They had 10 more children all born at Guernsey, Ohio: John Carothers II (born December 27, 1846, died October 31, 1915 Stanberry, Gentry, Missouri); George Patterson (born May 20, 1848, died March 6, 1900 Garner, Hancock, IA); Margaret Jane (born September 26, 1850, died October 25, 1904 Guernsey, Ohio); James (born September 20, 1852, died January 4, 1897 Guernsey, Ohio); Agnes E (born March 3, 1855, died January 30, 1915 Columbus, Franklin, Ohio); Andrew Garfield (born June 25, 1857, died April 16, 1908 Crawford, IA); Samuel M (born September 24, 1860, died March 14, 1933 Randolph West Virginia); Sarah Ann (born October 11, 1861, died September 19, 1943 Newark, Licking, Ohio); Martha (born September 16, 1866, died before 1870 Guernsey, Ohio); and Mary Dales (born October 18, 1869, died July 12, 1941 Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, Ohio). Found in the August 14, 1850 census at Monroe Township, Guernsey County, Ohio: dwelling 582, pg. 424B.Ann (should be William) Carothers 33, Sarah Carothers 27, Ann (should be William) Carothers 7, Jno (John) Carothers 5, Jno (George) P Carothers 2 (Census taker had poor penmanship so was hard to decipher). Found in the 1860 census at Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio: William Carothers, age 43, Male Farmer from Ireland; Sarah, age 40 (49) from Ireland; William D, age 16 from Ireland; John, age 14 from Ireland; George age 12 from Ohio; Margaret J. age 9 from Ohio; Agnes, age 7 from Ohio; Andrew, age 3 from Ohio; James, age 5 from Ohio. Agnes and Andrew's ages do not coincide with previous birthdates. Found in the 1870, 1880 censuses at Knox, Guernsey, Ohio: 1870: William Carothers 55, Sarah Carothers 51, James Carothers 17, Jane Carothers 19, Agness Carothers 15, Andrew Carothers 12. 1880: Wm. Crothers 63 farming from Ireland, both parents from Ireland; Sarah Crothers 59 keeping house, from Ireland, both parents from Ireland; Agness Crothers 24, James Crothers 27, Samuel Crothers 19, Sarah Crothers 16, Mary H. Crothers 11. (living next door to a Martha Patterson Gill and her daughter Sarah Aldridge and Sarah's 2 children). The Carothers name is Irish but they were definitely instrumental in building canals and mining in Wales also and research shows there were Carothers in Scotland and Wales. William L. Carothers died July 16, 1893 at Guernsey, Ohio and is buried at the Mount Hermon Cemetery at Knox, Guernsey, Ohio (located on County Road 19 & 638, next to Mount Hermon Church.)
