Mathews, 89, Newcomerstown, passed away late Sunday night (March 13, 2011) in the Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Guernsey County on Oct. 6, 1921, daughter of the late Frank Miller Sherrard and Mary Belle Gadd Sherrard. Mrs. Mathews was a homemaker for all her adult life and retired from the Newcomerstown School System, where she was employed for many years as a custodian. She attended Calvary United Methodist Church, Newcomertown, and enjoyed cooking,bakingquilting and traveling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. "Shorty" Mathews, Newcomerstown, on Aug. 9, 1998, and whom she married on April 25, 1958. Also deceased are three brothers and two sisters, Robert Sherrard, Canton, and Wilmer Sherrard, Leonard Sherrard, Ruth Gibson, and Isabelle Armstrong, all of Cambridge. She is survived by a daughter and a son, B. Louise Harold Mann, Cambridge and Ronald L. Mathews and wife Renee "Sam" Schlupp, Newcomerstown. Also surviving are six grandchildren Chad Robert and wife Jennifer Mann, Cambridge, Robbie Shawn Mann, Port Washington, Jacob Lewis Mathews, Zanesville, Taylor Elise Mathews, Dover, Zoey Marie Mathews, Newcomerstown, and Connor Spring, Newcomerstown. She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Abby Jo Mann and Benson A. Mann, Cambridge; a step-great-grandson, Michael Perkins, Cambridge; her sister, Jennie and husband Lawrence Jackson, Cambridge, a brother-in-law James Gibson, Cambridge; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Ella will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown, Burial will follow in Guernsey County Memory Gardens, Cambridge. Visiting hours will be from noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday at the funeral home.
