John E. Bruce. Among the leading members of the Hamilton county bar is John E. Bruce, who was born in Cleveland, Ohio, October 1, 1856, a son of Eli and Caroline M. (Eldridge) Bruce, who were natives of Ohio. Here he received his early education and later attended Western Reserve Academy and the Western Reserve College. From the latter institution he was graduatd with the class of 1876 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts three years later, and then began his career as a teacher. He was principal of the Hudson, Ohio, High School for two years, and then took up the study of law in the offices of the well-known law firm of Bradstreet & Biddle, Cincinnati. In the fall of 1878 Mr. Bruce came to Cincinnati, where he was admitted to the Hamilton county Bar, and in the Spring of 1879 began his professional career in partnership with E. P. Bradstreet. Later Mr. Bruce became a partner of Judge H. C. Whitman, for a time and then a partner of Judge Browiiman. In 1912 Mr. Bruce took his son, Edward K. Bruce, into partnership with him and continued in this manner until October, 1918, when the death of his son occurred. Since that time Mr. Bruce has continued alone and is recognized as one of the able lawyers of his state. In politics, Mr. Bruce is a Democrat and was a member of the State Legislature of 1883. He was also first Assistant United States Attorney, under both administrations of President Cleveland, and is now a member of the board of park commissioners. Fraternally he is a member of all the Masonic orders, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Cuvier Press Club, the Queen City Club, and the County, State and American Bar associations. In religious affiliation, Mr. Bruce and his family are members of the Episcopal church, and all are interested in its activities. On the I2th day of December, 1883, Mr. Bruce was united in marriage with Miss Alice Knowlton, who was born in Glendale, Ohio, a daughter of Cyrus and Amy Knowlton, well-known residents of Brandon, Vermont. Mrs. Bruce obtained her education in the public schools of Hudson, Ohio, and later attended the Lake Erie Seminary of Painesville, Ohio. She is a gentlewoman in the highest sense of the word and she is loved and respected by her countless friends throughout the city. To Mr. and Mrs. Bruce were born two children: Edward K.
