J. Frank Rolfes. While the greater part of the period of his activity had passed before he came to Crosby township, Hamilton county, Ohio, Mr. J. Frank Rolfes, of Cincinnati, has proven himself not only an agriculturist and stock-raiser of note, but a shrewd business man, a good and substantial citizen and a friend to all movements making for the progress and general advancement of the people. Mr. Rolfes was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, February 6, 1863, a son of George Herman and Elizabeth (Rueter) Rolfes, both of whom were natives of Hanover, Germany. Mr. George H. Rolfes came to this country in 1821 and located in Cincinnati where he engaged in the grocery business. He continued at this until he retired, when he removed to Westwood, where both he and Mrs. Rolfes passed away. Mr. Rolfes was an independent in politics and in religion a member of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic church of Cincinnati. Mr. Rolfes also served during the Civil war, as a private. Mr. and Mrs. Rolfes were the parents of six children, all of whom are deceased but J. Frank, who is the subject of this review. They were as follows: Elizabeth, Joseph, Berdina. Henry, J. Frank, and Mary. J. F. Rolfes obtained his early education in the St. Augustine's parochial schools of Cincinnati, and later at St. Mary's Seminary at Dayton, Ohio. After completing his education, he then accepted a position in the B. H. Warburg Brick Yards of Cincinnati, and after remaining here for a time, engaged in business for himself. He continued in this for fifteen years and in 1896 he came to Harrison, Ohio, where he purchased his present beautiful farm of 160 acres, where he is now engaged in general farming and stock raising, making a specialty of registered cattle and Duroc Jersey hogs, for which he has more than a local reputation. In politics, Mr. Rolfes is an Independent, and has been clerk of the school board for three years. He is a devotefi member of the St. John's Roman Catholic church of Harrison, and in fraternal organization is a member of the Knights of Columbus, as are his three sons, and the Catholic Knights of Ohio, St. Aloysius' Orphan Society and St. John's Society. Mrs. Rolfes is a member of St. Ann's Married Ladies' Society. He is also a member of the Grange. On the 24th day of June, 1885, Mr. Rolfes was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Warburg, a daughter of Bernard H. and Mary Bosse Warburg, well-known residents of Harrison, Ohio. To this union have been born thirteen children, as follows: Harry, who married Carrie, daughter of Philip Shuck, of South Gate, Ind., and to this union were born nine children, and after the death of the mother of this family, February 6, 1919, Mr. Rolfes married (second), January 25, 1920, Mary Louise Lang, daughter of John and Louise (Wagner) Lang, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and they reside at home; Edward, who married Mary Otto, a daughter of Charles Otto, and they are the parents of three children, Robert, Helen, and Louis, and reside at Harrison, Ohio; Joseph, deceased; •Mayme; Leonard, who married Aline, daughter of John and Mary Louise (Wagner) Lang; Francis, Clarence, Pauline, Bernard, at home; Edna and Walter, deceased; Carl, at home; and one who died in infancy. In concluding this review of Mr. Rolfes' life, it may be added that among his friends, acquaintances and business associates, he is regarded as one of the most kindly of men, and one who will always do full justice to the rights and interests of others.
